Course Overview
The 72 par course, designed by the American architect Ronald Fream, spreading over 198 acres of oak trees and meadows around the village and the Chateau, winds away from the clubhouse to the South before curving to the North around the chateau before reappearing from the East to finish on the 18th just below the Clubhouse terrace.
The Golf d'Arcangues clubhouse, a 15th century restored farmhouse perched on a natural summit overlooking the Basque Country, has a large English bar with lounge area, a corner for bridge players and a big open fireplace for the winter.
Course Details
This setting at Arcangues Golf Course provides beautiful views over the Basque countryside and the Pyrenees, and there is a nice balance between woodland holes and holes through open country.
A lot of earth was moved to make this once rugged landscape into a playable course, but inevitable slopes and hills still remain and can lead to some tricky shots.
Being able to flight the ball is more of an advantage, for this reason we would not recommend Arcangues to beginners or to seniors, unless on wheels.
As it is often the case with Ronald Fream's courses, the bunkers and greens have been given a lot of careful thought, which is only logical for a course as short as this.
The clubs catchphrase is 'precision play… with perhaps a bit of luck thrown in', as the layout is not as forthright as it may seem.
Arcangues is a very technical course that needs a little reconnaissance work before hoping to card a good score.
Also it features very differently from the other courses in the region, as there is a certain amount of improvement work ongoing to ease the course and site maintenance.
Arcangues Golf Course is a fine choice as part of your your golf holiday in Biarritz.
